Question Description

We are reading 2 primary sources, one by Andrew Jackson and one by Cherokee.

You will be reading two different perspectives and points of view on Indian Removal.

Read this excerpt from Andrew Jackson’s Second Annual Address to Congress, December 6, 1830 (Links to an external site.)

Read the Cherokee response to the Treaty of Echota September 28, 1836 (Links to an external site.) written by Chief John Ross

Definition: The Treaty of Echota was signed by 100 non-official representatives of the Cherokee tribe. This treaty was considered invalid by most of the Cherokee as their ruling Council did not approve it. The majority (over 15,000) Cherokee opposed this treaty. The treaty ceded all Cherokee territory east of the Mississippi River to the United States in exchange for $5 million and new homeland in Indian territory.
