Read and annotate The Concept of Discourse Community: Some Recent Personal History (Links to an external site.) and complete the following:
- In one paragraph, explain Swales definition of a Discourse Community (include one direct quote and format all source material).
- How is the scholarly reading and its definition of a DC different from the public/popular sources you explored? How are they the samewhat elements overlap across explanations and conversations?
- Explain the example of the Herbarium, English Language Institute, and the Computer Center, and discuss how it can help you determine what is a DC, what isnt a DC, and what is somewhere in the middle.
- Consider your potential Discourse Community with Swales eight criteria in mind. Where does your DC fit within Swales criteria? Would Swales say it is a DC, isnt a DC, or is somewhere in the middle. Explain why and use specific content from the article.
