Must complete attached documents and answer 4 questions:

a.In sentence form, write a short paragraph describing the purpose of the lab and the techniques used to meet all of the objectives.

b.In sentence form, summarize the procedure that was followed during this experiment. You must give a brief description of the process for all 6 of the tests used (including solubility and all of the chemical tests).

This info can be found in the background tab (identifying organic compounds link). Click on each test and get the details under “how to perform the test” and “indications of a positive test”.

c.Write a Discussion that indicates the identity for all 15 of the Unknowns (including the 3 that I demonstrated in the video). Your statement for each unknown can look something like this:

  • Unknown # ___ is a tertiary alcohol that has a high molar mass. I concluded this because it had a positive result in the Ceric Nitrate test which makes it an alcohol. It also had a negative result for the Chromic Acid test and thus it is not a primary or secondary alcohol. In addition, it is insoluble in water which means it must have a large number of carbons. This is all consistent with its high boiling point.

You can also use negative test results to help you explain why you identified an unknown a certain way:

4.Use the background information about identifying organic compounds to FILL IN THESE BLANKS.

In this experiment, you are narrowing down the possible identity of unknown compounds. The point is the at which a substance is readily converted from the liquid phase to the gas phase. This measurement, along with a substances’ in water, are physical properties that do a very good job of helping to identify an unknown organic compound. The groups present in a molecule help to determine many of the compound’s chemical properties. The Ceric Nitrate test shows a positive result for all whereas the test is only positive for those that are 10 and 20. Both aldehydes and are positive in the 2.4-DNPH test. In the KMNO4 test, alkenes are to glycols. However, are also oxidized in the KMnO4 test but they for a complex with the ion in the FeCl3 test.
