MOVIE REFLECTION RUBRIC

Introduction (15 points; no more than ½ page)

• Engages our attention in a few sentences (e.g., a related current event, a quote from the movie, a fact about the film we might not know from watching it, a personal experience, or other relevant set ups for stating the focus) (5 pts)
• States focus/purpose of the reflection (5 pts)
• Previews what’s covered in the reflection essay (5 pts)

The Reflection (70 points; 2 pages)

• Concept (25 pts)

• Selects a specific appropriate concept (not general) from assigned reading (5 pts)
• Offers correct textbook definition of concept, citing it in APA (10 pts)
• Ties definition to communication (10 pts)

• Reflection on the concept’s relatedness to an accurate and SPECIFIC scene in the film. Reflection demonstrates: (45 points)

• Describes a specific scene in the film—what characters are present, what they are doing and where they are doing it, the dialogue that is taking place. (take reader to the scene—make them feel as if they are watching that scene) (15 pts)
• Offers thoughtful & accurate examination of selected concept in that scene (15 pts)
• Reflects on the take-away of looking at the concept through THIS scene. What do we learn by looking at THIS scene through THIS concept? (15 pts)

Conclusion (15 points; no more than 1/2 page)

Closes in a way that engages your reader by doing TWO of the following:

• Connect the insights in some specific way to your own life, possibly in a way that you have begun to do, or have accomplished, OR
• Connect the insights to your profession or eventual profession, OR
• Connect the insights to a current event, OR
• Connect the insights to some other creative idea that you feel relates well to the movie

Mechanics/Style (30 pts) Form is the creation of an appetite in your reader and the adequate satisfying of that appetite (Kenneth Burke)

• Maximum of 3 pages (5 pages total with title page and reference page)
• Proper Grammar, spelling, & punctuation
• Organized clearly into introduction, reflection, and conclusion
• High readability of the paper (i.e., proper transitions, arguments move forward appropriately, engages with insights and quality evidence)

APA (20 pts)

• Title page APA formatted
• In-text citations APA formatted
• Reference list citation APA formatted
• Numbered pages, top right
• Header, top left
• Font sizes, margins, and font styles follow requirements (12 pitch font, times new roman)
