—- below is an example, you need to use pdf and above personal details, and youtube link to create this

Group J: David & Jimmy.

Discussion question: Ver (p 157-158). When should you cite sources in your speech? How should you cite them? Provide examples.

We think you should cite all secondary sources you rely on – newspapers, websites, buzzfeed, books, whatever – in your written outline (use APA citations). You should mention important sources in your actual speech. But don’t say too many because it will take up too much time and you need to spend most of your speaking time talking about your own ideas and thoughts. If you do mention a source you should use phrases like: “As stated in an LA Times article in 2017”; or “According to an article published in the Atlanta Law Journal”; or “Professor emeritus Takeshi Kitano of Tokyo University wrote in a Japan Times article in 2019 that…”.

Speech Comment: President Whitmore in Independence Day (1996):

Context:

This speech is in a movie and given by fictional President Whitmore (played by actor Bill Pullman). The film is about an alien invasion of Earth. The scene shows Whitmore giving a speech to pilots before the final battle of the movie. If they do not succeed in destroying the alien spaceship above them, the last bastion of the US military and political leadership will be wiped out. See: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116629/

Authority to speak (ethos):

He is President of the US and a retired US fighter pilot so he is qualified to order the counterattack and he also joins the squadron of planes against the aliens. He is leading from the front!

Persuasive message:

He urges the pilots that they must fight against the annihilation of the human race.

What techniques does he use to engage his audience: He uses “we” language: “We are fighting for our right to survive”. He argues that we are together as one, as the human race, for the first time. His tie is loosened to show he is no longer just the President and he is prepared to get his hands dirty. He’s wearing a bomber jacket to show he is one of them.

Cultural reference:

He refers to the poem Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. “Night” represents death and oblivion, and to “go quietly” (or “gentle”) means to go without a struggle or protest. The President urges them not to do this!

Comments:

We think this is a rather cheesy speech but in the context of a sci-fi action film it is appropriate. It is amusing to think of a US President actually willing to fight in a war and to save the rest of the world, not just “America First”. He speaks with good energy and seems to believe in what he is saying!

Memorable Line:

“…and should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, ‘We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on, we’re going to survive.’ Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”
