Subject of the paper: Ancient Astronomy for Astronomy 100 class Please include speech notes too.
Requirement: Ancient civilizations based much of their life around the Sun, Moon, and stars. Many constructed monuments and observatories to mark the passage of time and track the movements of celestial objects. In this assignment, you’ll be investigating one such structure and creating a slideshow about your findings.
Guidelines:
- Choose an ancient monument/observatory. One place to start searching is this website, (http://solar-center.stanford.edu/AO/) or this list from Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_archaeoastro…).
- Locate and read at least three sources about your structure. Your sources should be scientifically credible. Wikipedia does NOT count as a source. (But you can certainly use the References at the bottom of the Wikipedia page to locate potential sources.)
- Create a slideshow (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc) that addresses the following questions:
-
- What civilization built this structure? Include a brief overview of the civilization.
- How was the structure constructed?
- What is the purpose of this structure? (It should have something to do with astronomy!)
- How does the structure “work”?
- What archaeological and astronomical evidence leads people to this conclusion about its purpose?
- Are there alternative explanations as to its purpose? What are they? (If there aren’t any, say so.)
- What do you personally take away from researching this structure?
Your slideshow needs to include images, diagrams, drawings, etc. Don’t just make slides full of text. It’s best to answer one question in one slide.
DO NOT copy-and-paste text from your sources into your slides. Write it in your own words.
Include a slide listing your sources at the end of your slideshow. Use the MLA format for citations. Here’s a brief guide on citing using MLA (Links to an external site.).
Make sure you list all the sources you used, including the places where you got your images for the presentation.
You do not need to include any in-line citations within your slides themselves. I just need the list of sources at the end of your slideshow.
