For our assignment this week I went to Target where my wife enjoys shopping and I observed several children shopping with their parents.For this assignment, I chose two children to discuss using Eric Erikson’s Eight Stages of Development.

Observation

The first child (A) seemed to be a 4 or 5 years old boy.He was with his parents and two other older siblings.When I first saw him he was standing inside a clothes rack looking around.He then hopped down and jumped onto the shopping cart while his dad pushed him around.As I walked around the store I spotted this family again.This time child (A) was playing tag with his two sisters.His dad was yelling at him to stop, but would then continue shopping allowing his son to continue playing.The last time I observed child (A) he was pushing a bottle of apple juice around on the floor.

Child (B) was also a boy who appeared to be around 1 to 2 years old.He was being pushed around in a cart by his dad.He was looking and watched everything he passed very intently.At one point he saw something familiar and said, “Mickey.. Mouse.”Then he passed something else and said. “Donald.. Duck”Later on I observed him trying to stand up in the cart, but then quickly sat back down.At the end of my observation, they passed by the card aisle and he again said, “Mickey.. Mouse.”His dad grabbed the card and let him hold it.

Erikson’s Stages of Development

Erikson is known for his eight stages of Psychosocial Development that goes through the lifespan of an individual.In each of the eight stages, there is a challenge that must be faced that can produce either a positive or a negative outcome for personality development.When each challenge is overcome with a positive characteristic it produces virtues.When a person fails to complete a stage it reduces the likelihood they will complete the next stage and it could adversely impact their personality and sense of self (McLeod 2018)

Interpretation

Child (A) being either 4 or 5 would fall into Erikson’s Initiation vs. Guilt Stage.Cherry (2019) points out that this developmental stage is dependent on the previous stages of gaining the trust of authority figures and gaining a sense of independence.He or she is then able to explore the world, particularly through playing.While part of me was annoyed that Child (A)’s parents were letting him run around with little supervision, he felt secure enough to play by himself and with his sisters in the middle of Target.Wong et al. (2014) make a good point that there is a real balance between parents giving their child freedom to play without causing them to feel guilty while at the same time teaching boundaries for when it is the appropriate time to play.If parents restrict play too often children feel guilty, but when the right balance is met they gain the virtue of purpose (McLeod 2018).

Child (B) is in the Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt Stage.This is the stage in toddlerhood where children develop independence (McLeod 2018).I observed that Child B felt secure and trusted his dad.He was very curious about things in the store and seemed to be looking for things that he recognized.Wong et al. (2014) mention that children at this age often copy their parents and imitate them for play.It seemed that Child B was doing this exact thing as he watched his dad shop.He did try to get out of his seat once that I observed.It was as if he wanted to explore in more detail than he was able to in the confines of his seat. Being independent within a safe environment just like Child (B) was allowed to do promotes self-sufficiency and the virtue of will (Orenstein & Lewis2020).

Orenstein and Lewis (2020) suggest that while many of the stages of development are in childhood, they can still be used as guides for adults.Jesus reminds his listeners in the bible to be like children (English Standard Bible 2016, Mark 10:14-15).I have always understood this to mean “be humble.”Perhaps on a deeper level he wanted us to discover the values of hope, will, purpose, and competence like children.
