Question Description

Introduction for Lesson 9 Assignment – Research Proposal Part 2

In this assignment you will be focusing on your Research Proposal Part 2 (worth 50 points). The idea here is for you to start putting together a research protocol (see Lesson 8) using some guided questions.

Your Task:

You will use Parts 1 and 2 of the Research Proposal to help you complete Part 3 (Creating a presentation of your Research Proposal – Lesson 12 – that will be posted for your fellow students to review in Lesson 13 discussion).

To submit your assignment make sure to upload your answers to the question under one file. Please make sure that if you are not using Microsoft Word, to upload your assignment answers in PDF format.

Part A (20 points)

Now that you have identified your research question and the study design you will be using for your Research Proposal (see Research Proposal Part 1 in Lesson 5), answer the following questions. Please make sure that you use the information you learned in Lesson 8 (study population) to answer the questions below.

  1. What is your research question?
  2. What is your study design?
  3. Who is your target population? Be specific and remember to review Lesson 8!
  4. Who is your source population? Be specific
  5. Who is your sample population? Be specific
  6. What are your inclusion and exclusion criteria for your study participants? Remember that if you are using comparison groups, you must indicate the inclusion and exclusion criteria used for each group.
  7. What sampling methods would you use to select your sample population? Be specific and provide examples on how you will do this in your own study.
  8. Why do you think these sampling methods would be appropriate for your study design and population of choice? Explain your answer.
  9. What methods would you use to recruit your study population? Here you must explain in some detail how you would recruit your study participants.

Part B (20 points)

For this part of the assignment you will be using the research question, study design, and population you identified in Research Proposal Part 1 (Lesson 5) and Part A (above) to answer the questions below.

  1. List three (3) data collection tools (methods)—one of which must be an objective measure—you would use in your study. Be specific!
    • Why did you choose each of these data collection tools?
    • What type of information would you be collecting using each tool? Explain your answer.
      • Remember to use the information you have learned from the class and readings (do not forget about validity and reliability of your tool). Make sure to keep in mind your population and study design.
  2. What would you envision would be the best delivery method for each tool? (For example, if you are doing interviews, would you visit your participants at home or ask them to come to you?) Be specific here.
  3. What obstacles do you foresee people in your study population AND/OR research assistants may encounter when using your measurement instrument/tool? (Think about education, reading and comprehension, physical impairments, etc.) Make sure to elaborate on your answer.

Part C (10 points)

Now that you have identified your research question, study design, population, and the data collection tools you will be using for your Research Proposal, you will need to identify TWO peer-reviewed journal articles additional to the ones that you identified in Part 1 of your research proposal.

These two peer-reviewed, primary study articles should have used one or more of the data collection tools you outlined in Part B of this assignment and must have focused on the topic and population of interest to you. The purpose is for you to find support in the literature for the application/use of these data collection tools/methods in your own study. Using these articles:

  • Write a 250-word paragraph to justify the use of the one or more data collection tools outlined in part B of this assignment for your proposed study. The idea is for you to use both articles in the 250-word paragraph. Remember these articles must be different from the ones you used in Part 1 of your research proposal. Make sure to include:
    • In-text citations and a reference list in APA style
    • Include a word count at the end or below your paragraph
    • DO NOT include direct quotes from the articles. The idea is for you to provide an argument in your own words, using the articles as references, as to why you can use the data collection tools outlined in Part B.
    • IMPORTANT: Make sure to upload to this assignment the PDF files of the two articles you reviewed.

Remember:

  • For this assignment you will need to submit a total of three (3) files: One (1) file with your answers to Parts A and B. The other two (2) files will be the PDF copies of the articles you reviewed for Part B.
  • You can submit your assignment as many times as you would like. However, only your last submission will be graded.
  • Please make sure to follow the Module Assignment Guidelines and the Guidelines for the Use of References available under the ‘Syllabus and Course Documents’ link.
