Exploring the Writing Conventions and Culture of Your Future Professional Field:

Creating A Guide to Writing with Significance and Worth

Assignment:

Research about the culture and professional writing conventions in your field through two expert interviews, and one Rhetorical/Genre analysis of a specific type of writing vital to your field.

Based on your interviews and/or Rhetorical/Genre analysis explain anything that you learned about the professional culture in your future work field. Also, explain eight to ten specific conventions writers should know.

Next, translate your findings into a guide that incoming freshmen in your major can use to help them learn about the culture and writing conventions of their future profession.

Finally, write a one-page memo to me (formatted like the example memo on p. 314-316 of An Insider’s Guide) explaining how you used ethos, pathos, and logos appeals in your guide to persuasively convey your research to your audience of freshmen.

Objectives:

  1. Your objective is to perform primary research and to practice using the rhetorical and genre analysis skills, learned in the first two units, as flexible research tools to study writing in your future profession.
  2. You will also practice communicating persuasively in different modes/genres.
  3. After everyone presents their projects, you should also be able to describe what makes a significant and worthy writer in various fields

Audiences:

Your audience for the guide to writing is all freshmen in your major.

I am your audience for the memo.

Formats:

Choose to use a genre for your guide that will appeal to incoming freshmen in your major. This guide can be any format, if you can justify in your memo that it will appeal to your audience; past project genres used: a pamphlet; YouTube video; magazine article; news article; Podcast; Prezi, etc. The memo you write to me will be in business memo format; see pages 314-316 in your textbook.
