UM Observations Concerning the Civil Wars in Iraq Lebanon and Algeria Response
Question Description
please respond in one paragraph.
– After studying these three unique cases of civil war in Iraq, Lebanon, and Algeria, it is clear that though there were many differences, there are some shared causal factors within each case. In all of these cases, many scholars seek to explain these civil wars as a result of ethnic cleavages within the states. However, it is clear that the common denominator within all three cases of civil wars is greed for political power and economic resources. These wars arose as a result of repressive states trying to grab political power and oppressing opposing political views. While these party lines were, at times, drawn according to ethnic or linguistic division, there are many examples of different ethnic groups living in harmony. For instance, there is a large linguistic barrier within Algeria. However, this was not a source of violence. Instead, conflict over political power and repression of opposing political parties ultimately led to the outbreak of a civil war. Ultimately, many factors such as the presence of lootable resources, ethnic cleavages, and repressive states were present within these cases; however, I believe the true cause of civil war is the struggle for political power.
