We recommend that you use your Weekly Reading Guides to start planning the essay. Please also consult the “Afterword” chapter of Mike Rose’s Why School? for writing tips.

Directions

Write a three-page response to the prompt below (double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins). Your reference list should be on a fourth page. Use APA, or another consistent format, for in-text citations and the reference list.

Essay Prompt

Write an editorial for a newspaper or a letter to an elected official to present your perspective on an educational issue that we have studied in this course.

To fully respond to this prompt, you will need to:

• present a brief overview of the specific educational issue and why it is important (no more than 5-6 sentences);

• present your perspective on what needs to be done to address the issue; • use the course readings to support your perspective;

• acknowledge a different perspective using evidence from the readings; and • conclude with a summary statement (no more than 5-6 sentences).

To submit the essay, save the file as a Word document, and use the following naming convention: LastName_FirstName_Essay1. Upload the essay to the respective assignment folder on CCLE by the due date.

If you have questions about the assignment, please make an office hours appointment with either in the instructor or teaching assistant. We also encourage you to make an appointment at the UCLA Undergraduate Writing Center (https://wp.ucla.edu/wc/) before submitting your essay.
