Have you ever wondered why water, if it is not being disturbed settles down into a nice smooth surface? It is actually the result of a phenomenon known as SurfaceTension.

Water molecules are drawn to each other because of a force called cohesion. The water molecules below the surface of a body of water are all attracted equally to each other. Those on the surface of the water are pulled downward by the molecules underneath, and sideways by the water molecules around them, which results in a sort of “skin” of water being formed on top. This “skin” is called SurfaceTension.

To demonstrate, try the folowing Lab Experiment:

Purpose: To learn more about SurfaceTension.

Hypothesis: Students must read through the procedure and then formulate their own hypothesis

Materials: a bowl, water, black pepper, a drop of liquid dish soap

Procedure: Students must complete the following procedure.

Fill the bowl with water.
Sprinkle some black pepper on the surface of the water.
Record what happened on the attached Lab Sheet.
Wash your hands.
Dry them well.
Touch the tip of your index finger to the surface of the water-pepper mixture

Put a drop of liquid soap on your fingertip.
Touch a drop of the soap to the surface of the water-pepper mixture.
