MATH 1330 TUTA Fraction Strip Diagrams & Arithmetic Procedures Worksheet
Question Description
There will be two problems (described below) and each one will be worth 4 points. You must complete these problems in the usual write-up format and use fraction strip diagrams to find and explain the solutions. Arithmetic procedures or other types of diagrams will not earn credit.
- There was a jar of cookies on the table. Amanda, who was hungry, ate one eighth of the cookies. Then Beth came along and ate a seventh of what was left in the jar. Next, Christine came by and decided to take one third of the remaining cookies with her to class. Then Danielle dashed up and took five cookies to eat. When Eleanor looked at the cookie jar, she saw that there were five cookies left. How many cookies were there in the jar to begin with?
- In a case of candy bars, there are a total of 12 candy bars, and they will be shared equally among 8 people.
- If we consider the case as our whole, what fraction of the whole will each of the 8 people receive?
- If we consider each candy bar as our whole (with a total of 12 candy bars), what fraction of the whole will each of the 8 people receive?
For each problem (1 & 2), include the following in your write-up.
- A statement of the problem at hand
- Any strategies you used (including how you used fraction strip diagrams) to attack the problem
- The solution you obtained, with an explanation of how you got it using fraction strip diagrams (and how you know it is complete)
- A conclusion that says what we can take with us from the problem
