Now that you’ve read “Apollo,” I would like you to watch this video (Links to an external site.) with author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in which she talks about what is lost or missed when we read or write only a “single story” of a place, especially one other than our own.

After you’ve watched the video, please respond to the following:

1. What was your impression of the TED TALK with Adichie? Did it help you better understand her writing style, her purpose as a writer, etc.? How so? (1 point)

2. Adichie says, “All that I heard about [my houseboy’s family growing up] was how poor they were so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything but poor. Their poverty was my single story of them.” Do you think, in Adichie’s portrayal of houseboy* Raphael in “Apollo,” Raphael is painted with more nuance and depth than the single stroke of “poverty”? 3. Do you think that the narrator, Okenwa, himself sees Raphael as more than just “poor” and “the help?” How so?
