1. Some scientists in recent years have argued that their research shows that humans don’t have free will because they have shown that determinism is true. Explain what Nahmias thinks is problematic about arguments of this sort.
2. What is the distinction Nahmias makes between determinism and mechanism? Why does Nahmias think that, even if were to discover that mechanism is true, that wouldn’t give us a good reason for thinking we don’t have free will?

Nahmias says that if scientists were able to show that [E2] “our actions do not properly derive from our conscious reasoning, decisions, and intentions,” that would give us good reason to doubt that we have free will. But Nahmias argues that the studies done by Libet and Soon et al. don’t show that our actions do not properly derive from our conscious reasoning, decisions, and intentions. Why don’t they show this?
