DV College Torture and Interesting Arguments & Life Changing Experience Discussion
Question Description
FIRST
In The Orphan Master’s Son you are reading about the experiences of a torturer through his own eyes. He sees himself as a kinder, gentler torturer–a biographer not to be confused with the elderly Pubyk, proud of their misshapen hands and the old way of doing things. Through Johnson’s eyes we experience what Jun Do is enduring –just as we learned last week how the former captain of the Junma met his end and what it took for Jun Do to escape the prison mine.
Fifteen years ago Senator John McCain–a former prisoner of the Vietnamese for five years and held in excruciating conditions–wrote an endpaper for Newsweek magazine. His article is the first thing listed in this module. Think about what your views on torture are–perhaps not carefully thought through with so much else going on; then read John McCain’s piece; watch the first two youtube videos in this module, then think about the experiences of Jun Do, Comrade Buc, and the captain.
Post your observations about the act of torture itself, McCain’s observations, the real experiences, and the experiences of the characters in The Orphan Master’s Son in about 150 words. Then comment on three of your classmates’ observations.
