Question Description

ISO 9000

1-The ISO 9000 suite of standards underwent a revision in 2015. Search the web for articles and materials about ISO 9000, and determine what was changed in the most recent edition.

Describe one of the significant changes to the ISO 9000 model in 2015 and discuss how you think this can affect the implementation and impact of the model in an organization. What previous problem do you think the change addresses?

Response Guideline

Post your response of 1-3 paragraphs (about 100-200 words) by the TUESDAY due date for this discussion assignment, and then reply to at least two initial responses of your peers, particularly focusing on responses that might differ from your own. Also respond appropriately to anyone who posts questions against your own postings. Discuss the content! Keep responses focused on the substance of the issue, not simply on agreeing with a comment or encouraging each other.

Six Sigma articles contrast

2- Two of the assigned readings this week on Six Sigma have the same title, although they don’t describe their content with the same focus or depth.

Discuss how these two articles differ in their approach to describing their subject, and give examples of different audiences that might benefit from reading one of these over the other. How do you, as an industrial engineer, need to understand and appreciate both perspectives?

Response Guideline

Post your response of 1-3 paragraphs (about 100-200 words) by the TUESDAY due date for this discussion assignment, and then reply to at least two initial responses of your peers by Monday 11/30 at 9:00p, particularly focusing on responses that might differ from your own. Also respond appropriately to anyone who posts questions against your own postings. Discuss the content! Keep responses focused on the substance of the issue, not simply on agreeing with a comment or encouraging each other.

Implementing Baldrige

3- Most organizations that obtain and review the Criteria for the Baldrige Award never actually apply for the award.

Explain and discuss how the award Criteria can form the basis for continuous improvement within an organization. If you – as quality engineer – were assigned to “implement” the Criteria within your company, how would you go about it, and how long do you think it would take.

Response Guideline

Post your response of 1-3 paragraphs (about 100-200 words) by the TUESDAY due date for this discussion assignment, and then reply to at least two initial responses of your peers by Monday 11/30 at 9:00pm, particularly focusing on responses that might differ from your own. Also respond appropriately to anyone who posts questions against your own postings. Discuss the content! Keep responses focused on the substance of the issue, not simply on agreeing with a comment or encouraging each other.

Baldrige Criteria

4- Describe what you believe to be the most important of the criteria categories for the Baldrige National Quality Award, and indicate what specific things you would be looking for in another company if you were conducting a benchmark study of that company for your organization.

Response Guidelines

Your response to this topic should be roughly 150-250 words. In addition, respond to at least two other posts from others in this class by Monday evening 11/30 at 9:00p, trying to emphasize responding to people who have expressed positions that are different from your own. Continue the dialogues with anyone who responds to your posts. Substantive posts and responses are those that further develop the topic and pursue understanding of the domain. Simple messages that offer agreement or simple encouragement are considered conversant, but are not considered substantive. See the discussion grading rubric in the syllabus for more guidance on discussion posting.

Multi-stage Systems

5- In our Shi and Zhou reading this week, we explore issues related to quality control across multi-stage systems; the most common form of system we deal with as industrial engineers. Your certification system is a multistage system, and so the reading can help you see how some of the variables in that system contribute to an understanding of quality for the system as a whole. As quality engineers, we have to pay attention to all of the variables that determine overall system quality to its customers (as denoted by the Customer Sigma Score) as well those that drive internal system performance and quality (as denoted by Process Sigma Score). This reading helps explain how those two perspectives interact so heavily.

Think about your journey through UCF, and through this IEMS department in particular. Use the concepts in the reading to discuss the key outcome and process variables you see as important in understanding the series of courses that you take to ultimately earn your degree. How do course prerequisites, and whether students meet them, fit into this overall thought process? What needs to be done in the design of the system to ensure quality throughout such interactions?

Response Guideline

Post your response of 1-3 paragraphs (about 100-200 words) by the TUESDAY due date for this discussion assignment, and then reply to at least two initial responses of your peers by Monday 11/30 at 9:00p, particularly focusing on responses that might differ from your own. Also respond appropriately to anyone who posts questions against your own postings. Discuss the content! Keep responses focused on the substance of the issue, not simply on agreeing with a comment or encouraging each other.
