Santa Monica College The Poem The Lamb and The Tyger Discussion

Santa Monica College The Poem The Lamb and The Tyger Discussion

Santa Monica College The Poem The Lamb and The Tyger Discussion

Question Description

In both of these poems, the speaker is asking the listener (each animal, respectively, is the listener) about the act of their creation. The very different nature of these two animals and the larger elements they may represent (in humanity or just in the world) gets to the heart of the speaker’s question – what is the nature of creation?

Whether speaking of a literal God like the Christian one that would have been the most familiar in William Blake’s immediate surroundings or just the general concept of a singular Creator, this poem also asks about the nature of things. I want you to post what you think these poems, when read together as companion pieces, ultimately say about the nature of creation.

You do need to specifically reference the poems, but some questions that you can think about as you are reading the poems and constructing your posts/replies.

  • How/why do good and evil exist together? (We would refer to this as “duality”)
  • Why do negative things (death, destruction, violence, fear, sadness) need to exist?
  • Who would be capable of creating a tiny, sweet, innocent lamb and a being of destruction, like a tiger?
  • What would be their reason for doing so?

As always, you will need an original post of your own as well as two replies to posts from your classmates. Make sure to reference back to the page on how discussion posts are graded if you have been missing the mark or confused by a lack of success on other discussions.
