The death of Emmett Till clearly shows how America in the 1960s was complicit in its acceptance of violence against African Americans. As Americans we need to question why the lynching of Till was caused by the nature and history of America itself and by a social system that encouraged blaming the victim if that victim were black. We need to ask whether or not it is fair to compare the killing of Emmett Till to the killings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and the other African Americans who have been killed by white law enforcement officers. Are these killings the end result of a social system that continues to perpetuate injustice today?

Prompt 1:

Author Timothy Tyson, in his book, The Blood of Emmett Till, writes that the lynching of Emmett Till was caused by the nature and history of America itself and by a social system that has not changed all that much since the 1960s.

“America is still killing Emmett Till,” Tyson writes, “often for the same reasons that drove the violent segregationists of the 1950s and 1960s.”

After studying the Civil Rights Movement and reading stories and poems related to the fight for civil rights, would you agree or disagree with this statement. Why or why not? Use specific examples to support your opinions.

Prompt 2

For your journal entry, find a recent example of civil disobedience and address the following:

  1. When and where did the person’s act(s) of civil disobedience take place?
  2. What specific societal issue(s) inspired him/her to commit civil disobedience?
  3. How much recognition (or notoriety) did the person receive as a result?
  4. When viewed in hindsight, how successful were the actions? Was there a change in policy as a result? Did the acts bring the issues into focus for the public?

Prompt 3:

Was it a “crime” for Minnie to strangle her husband or simple justice?

Requirements:

  • Write an original journal entry that answers the prompt in no less than 200 words.
  • Make sure you have a clearly stated thesis and that your posting defends this thesis.
  • You also need to include at least two references to research to support your opinions.
  • Cite the source at the end of the posting
  • Your response to one class mate should be at least 100 words and should further the conversation.

George Perry Floyd Jr. was an African American man killed during an arrest after a store clerk alleged he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis. A white police officer named Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for a period initially reported being 8 minutes and 46 seconds, this ending in his death. In videos of the incident, you can hear him plan a day repeating that he could not breathe, and nothing was done to stop the officers. We have seen riots and protests all over the world and not just in America in memory of Mr. Floyd.Breona Taylor is another example of civil disobedience. Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old unarmed African-American woman, was fatally shot in her Louisville, Kentucky apartment when two undercover police officers entered her apartment.
The deaths of these two Americans had a cause-effect all over the United States and was even seen in other countries protesting the police brutality and the deaths of these individuals. There was rioting, protests, deaths of protesters, etc and news coverage on every platform for months.
These two cases and the civil disobedience that came after these deaths brought about protests to change law enforcement and the training for law enforcement. After Taylor’s death,A law was made, this law is called Breonna’s Law and requires all officers who serve warrants to wear body cameras and have them turned on from at least five minutes before the warrant is served to at least five minutes after.George Floyd’s death also gave birth to a new law. The George Floyd Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act of 2020 (LETIA) is a subtitle of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 which aims to reduce the prevalence of police brutality by fostering connections between police departments and communities.
