Classmate A’s post:

I thoroughly enjoyed his lecture and obviously thought he was very knowledgable and provided a lot of good insight on the topic of industrial organizational psychology. I think it is wonderful when he mentioned how he decided to write the textbook for his students at Cal State Fullerton because he thought the existing textbooks were too technical, almost like graduate level. I do think the textbook is easy to understand which helps me as a student be more excited when learning about the concepts. I also think his conversation about women in leadership positions was interesting to hear from his perspective. He discussed a study “Think Leader Think Man” in which the qualities that people associated with great leaders greatly overlapped with qualities that people associated with men. However, Dr. Riggio explained how women have more qualities associated with displaying exemplary leadership. I think biases about masculine leadership need to change in order to understand that both men and women are capable and have the qualities to be excellent leaders.

Hi A,

I found the “Think Leader Think Man” study interesting as well. I can see the biases against women in leadership often. In my experience, there have been many occasions where my words are overlooked or ignored in a group. I think this is partly due to me being female in that my words are perceived as less important than a male’s. It’s subtle and a unconscious thought that I’m sure many people don’t mean to think. I’m not surprised that women have more qualities associated with good leadership because women on average tend to be better communicators than men. As a leader, communication is the most important aspect.

I thought it was interesting and comforting to know that he didn’t find his passion instantly and sort of found it unexpectedly, which was I/O psychology. It was cool how his initial interest was social psychology which is something that I myself am interested in. However, I’m not really sure what field of psychology I want to pursue and I am afraid that I am going to choose something that I have no passion for. It was cool how his interest in social psychology was merged with business and that’s how he discovered I/O psychology. It was interesting to hear that he felt like an imposter since he wasn’t really an I/O psychologist, despite having lots of knowledge on the subject. Being that he is the author of our book it was nice knowing what motivated him to write our book. What caught my attention was when he explained that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Rich organizations actually acknowledge that they have problems which is something that I found shocking, compared to poor organizations that tend to deny their problems.
