Cultural Competence

After reading the chapter and the section on cultural competencies (p. 209 – 214), select two videos to view from the Multimedia list on the Week Five Resources page list provided on the website. The video listings include brief descriptions of the some of types of diversity depicted in videos, however, individuals in the videos may identify with more than one of the categories listed as well as additional categories not listed. After viewing, discuss the video’s content in relation to cultural competencies. Give examples of cultural bridging techniques you observed in the skits or were discussed by panelists or lecturers. Compare and contrast examples of culturally sensitive and culturally insensitive interactions between the clients/patients and health professionals as depicted or discussed in the videos you selected.

Your response must be at least 250-300 words. Support your comments with two scholarly references and respond to at least two of your classmates and any replies your instructor makes to you.

Hello Class,

The video with Dr. Grande, you see that a woman named Susan is meeting relationship resistance with her mother in law (2017). This relationship dynamic is not new but has present for more than 11 years since Susan and her husband have been dating. Susan has a family with her husband and feels like a failure because of the distance her mother in law has with her and her children’s lives. In the text Schmidt says that we must be aware of the multitude of ways that cultural background and experiences influence thought process (2019). For Susan, a factor in her self-identity is family. It is causing her distress because she is the reason for this disconnect according to her mother in law. Susan yearns to reach a good relationship for the sake of her family and kids. Dr. Grande stated that everyone has their own behavior and thought, but we don’t always have to make sense of it and sometimes we can’t. The reason he said that was because the client was internalizing this feeling of disapproval. For this example there was not any efforts in really bridging the gap between mother and daughter but more of accepting the fact that the relationship may not ever be improved and it was not her fault. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and maybe her concept of family was not as important to her due to some form of cultural diversity.

In the second video I have chosen it shows nursing situations that are not aligned with the typical western and heterosexual individuals that are considered the norm. It shows these situations being handled as an uncultured incompetent and how to handle it being culturally sensitive even if it is not within your beliefs as a human services professional. In the video it states that culture doesn’t only involve race and religion but encompasses how a group may identify themselves (2011). This video allows you to see situations that may not be uncommon but that you may not know how to address without being biased or insensitive to someone else. The bridging techniques in this video are being aware of your thoughts and not reacting without being sensitive to others beliefs and traditions. We must recognize that we will be working in an environment that will recognize the diversity of people and respect their belief systems. We must all be prepared to give culturally competent care.

Hello,

The video about the woman’s problems with her mother in law is a very hard relationship to work through especially because of her family values and cultures. It makes her feel like she is a second class citizen and also her children are being ignored. Her husband must feel hopeless because if he sticks up for his wife it will damage the relationship with his mother. But he is wrong to allow his wife and children to be treated like this, if he would just put his foot down and stick up for his wife his mothers behavior towards his family might change. He is allowing the situation to escalate and it is very stressful on his wife. I feel that the therapist is trying to teach her how to deal with the situation differently so she is not so bothered by her relationship with her mother-in -law. He realizes that the woman has opted for counseling because she is experiencing a problem she can not fix on her own.” As such, typical models of counseling began with a deficit perspective of the client, or a problem orientated assessment of the clients situation”(Schmidt,J.,2019).
