classmate discussion answer:

Harapan et al. (2020) examined the recent global increase of human incidence of monkey pox. It is a zoonotic disease that is typically contracted in rain forests in Central and West Africa. It has a 10% mortality rate with the majority being younger in age. The symptoms include fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes (WHO, 2019). The authors acknowledge the lack of confidence in the medical professionals in diagnosing and caring for those with the disease. This is concerning because there has been a rise in cases and most of the surveyed physicians agree monkeypox is a serious disease and has the potential to affect the economy (Harapan et al., 2020).

Ogoina et al. (2019) examined the 2017 monkeypox outbreak in Nigeria. The hospital studied for this outbreak was provided national resources to bound the outbreak and underwent emergent training for precautions and best practices concerning the disease and isolation procedures. The patients and their families were anxious and concerned about stigma from hospital workers. This stemmed from past treatment from hospital workers for skin rashes. Patients were also worried about treatment from their local community if put in isolation for the disease. The disease was categorized as “strange” by the media, furthering the distance of patients from seeking care and executing proven successful treatments. Unfortunately, in this case the hospital was hesitant to promptly explain to the public what was unfolding. Additionally, the practitioners did not have standardized procedures for isolation and themselves feared the disease leading to delayed proper care. Some vital factors to emergency health messages include prompt, relevant information and timely updates. When health care professionals provide this to the public, they are able to develop a plan for the themselves and their families while minimizing the chance of stigma. In other words, it normalizes the situation so that those who need help can get it and those who do not may provide a helping hand. This may include simply staying away from those who are infected.
