APUS The MMR Vaccine & Autism Negative Correlation Because of Trust Issues Discussion

Question Description

write a 200 word response to each of the posts:

After watching the video i definitely feel as if there is a negative correlation between the two, simply because there is a lack of trust in what is going on in the government. I feel as if many people feel as if it is because of the vaccine that they are becoming ill, and in some cases even more ill then what they originally where. I feel as if the relationship between the MMR vaccine and and autism is also another situation where you just do not have trust. I feel as if the article that was put out was not a mistake and it caught many peoples attention. So now you have many people who trust in then you have the other 50 percent of people who do not. I definitely feel as if the relationship between the two is spurious, again simply because people do not know what to believe. You want to believe that it is there to help and prevent illnesses, but when you see people taking ti and saying I caught this illness after taking the vaccine rather than before, it can be extremely alarming, especially when we are talking about a life changing disability. According to the PBS video , the growing understanding of autism is the reason for the rising cases. He talked about how when you learn about the many different traits of this illness you will realize that it is lot more common than we think.

  1. Is there a negative correlation between vaccinations and measles?

According to the report, yes there is a negative correlation between vaccinations and measles. It has been stated that the less vaccinations people receive, the increased cases of measles. In contrast, the more vaccines given the less cases of measles. Researchers have shown that since people have gotten a vaccine for the measles, the disease has decreased tremendously. As reported, “Nearly everyone in the U.S. got measles before there was a vaccine, and hundreds died from it each year. Today, most doctors have never seen a case of measles,” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.com). Some may ask with outstanding results like these, why continue to get vaccinated? Well the vaccination is not only a great way to protect yourself, but also the people around you. The disease infected a large number of infants and adults. Infants and people that are incapable of taking care of themselves face a great danger when the people around them are not vaccinated. They are at risk of being exposed to the disease at any moment. As stated, “ If one person in a community gets an infectious disease, they can spread it to others who are not immune. But a person who is immune to the disease because he/she has been vaccinated can’t get that disease and can’t spread it to others” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.com). If only a small amount of people get vaccinated, the disease can easily spread. On the other hand, if most people get vaccinated the spread of the disease can be contained and minimized. Overall, the relationship between vaccinations and measles is negative.

2. Do you think the relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism is positive, negative or spurious?

The relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism is spurious. The two may seem to be closely related but there is a different cause for both variables. There may be another factor affecting these two. In some instances, a child may have an allergic reaction to a vaccine, maybe a small rash or slight fever. However, it has been proven undoubtedly that vaccines are safe for children to use. Even with this evidence parents still decide not to vaccinate their children. As terrible as it is to say, without the vaccinations some children will become extremely ill, or possibly die. Although some believe the MMR vaccine may somewhat be linked to the cause of autism, there is no hard evidence to prove it. Therefore, the relationship between the two is spurious.

3. What is responsible for the rising cases of autism according to the PBS report below?

According to the PBS report, once the new definition of what autism is and the symptoms were explained, it was a more commonly seen disability amongst children. The strict diagnosis had been eliminated and researches could see the symptoms were more common than they expected. All in all, this inevitably caused the increased and rise of autism cases.
