One data collection challenge that needs to be addressed in any study is the decline in survey response. This is one of the biggest challenges that researchers face. There are many reasons as to why there is a low survey response rate. One of the reasons for low survey response rate when conducting in-person surveys is due to some of the participants being uninformed of the survey activities. Because of this, it can cause those participants to refuse to participate in the survey. According to Perrin (2015), “For in-person data collection, investigators schedule appointments at the convenience of the respondents” (p. 203). By doing so, this can help to increase the survey response rate.

An example of this data collection challenge was a study done at Ranau Township. The study was conducted to determine the risk and durability of the building when the earthquake happens. During the data collection, there were many challenges that came with the study. One of the challenges was that “some of the residents were uninformed of the survey activities due to no communication system available in the community” (Mohamad et al., 2018). As a result, some residents refuse to participate in the survey. In the discussion part of the study, it mentioned all the challenges that researchers faced during the data collection and how the challenges may have impacted the survey results. The reason for those challenges is because of the lack of planning that the researchers had done before conducting the study. In the future, the experience of the challenges that the researchers went through in this study will be helpful for them when it comes to planning for another research similar to this one.

Hello Class & Professor Dashevsky,

For our week 5 discussion we were asked to describe some challenges that are faced when collecting data after reading chapters 8 and 9 of our book. Getting it right or as close to right as possible is critical when collecting data. The consequences of failing to properly collect data include the inability to answer your research questions, inability to validate the results, distorted findings, wasted resources, misleading recommendations and decisions, and harm to participants.

Incorrect data could compromise the trustworthiness of the findings, ultimately compromising the results. A few challenges data collectors can experience include complicated forms, literacy and language barriers, geographical barriers, insufficiently trained staff, lack of understanding, untrusted data, inappropriate sampling, and lack of participation. All the listed challenges can compromise the legitimacy of the findings and ultimately making the data collected insufficient (which would be a hard pill to swallow after all the of time, resources, money, and effort spent).

One study I found that experienced data collection challenges is the International Alcohol Control Study (IACS) in Tshwane, South Africa. The methods used for this study include Data on methodological and other challenges emerged from feedback sessions held with fieldworkers, supervisors, observations made of and follow up meetings with project investigators, based on the pilot and main study of 2844 adults and adolescents in Tshwane (Nel, 2015). One challenge they experienced was a resultant lengthy questionnaire which negatively impacted on participation; potential participants sometime being afraid to allow fieldworkers onto premises due to high crime rates in many participating areas and religious beliefs concerning alcohol consumption that prevented some parents from consenting to their adolescent childrens participation. It was hard for fieldworkers to conduct research because of logistical challenges, long distances, geographical strains, incomplete interviews, and high non-response rates (Nel, 2015). The need for better measures of the impact of alcohol policy implementation and lack of sufficient date from the initial IACS study, a multi-country collaboration was performed involving England, Scotland, Thailand, South Korea and New Zealand to help eliminate the geographical challenges faced in the initial study.
