For this week’s discussion, I chose home-based care settings such as home health and hospice as my areas of interest. These specific healthcare settings are of interest for me as I currently work for a Medicare-certified home health agency. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), the information contained in the national home and hospice care survey is intended to provide applicable and helpful data on home health and hospice agencies, their staffs, their services, and their patients. According to Porche (2019), health policymaking and revisions based on available evidence and information bolsters the support for policy decisions from the intended audience. Therefore, the understanding specific information about the healthcare setting of choice can assist in future policy implementation and changes.

For example, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), 56% of home health agency patient care revenue comes from Medicare in 2007. Based on this data, a home health agencies must cater its policies and procedures in ensuring compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation in order to continue receiving reimbursement from Medicare. Similarly, since Medicare is the dominant insurance provider, allocation of staff resources to retain the core services such as skilled nursing and therapy are essential. This is due to home health agencies offering skilled nursing services at 95% and physical therapy at 79% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015).

Hello Class and Professor Urmala,

This week we were asked to select a link from the National Health Care Surveys (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) website and answer the given questions. I chose the National Post-acute and Long-term Care Study because I have worked in a long-term specialized nursing facility while going through nursing school and thought I should choose something familiar. The National Post-acute and Long-term Care Study includes long-term care hospitals as well as post-acute rehabilitation centers.

The biennial National Post-acute and Lon-term Care Study (NPALS) monitors trends in supply, provision, and use of major sectors of paid, regulated long-term care services (CDC, 2020). The survey data on residential car community and adult day services. The NPALS uses the survey data on residential care community and adult day service sectors, while the administrative data is used for home health, nursing home, hospice, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and long-term care sectors (CDC, 2020). The driving force behindNPALS is to offer “offer reliable, accurate, relevant and timely national and state statistical information to support and inform post-acute and long-term care services policy, research and practice” (SITE). The information offered by NPALS is immensely valuable to all healthcare facilities and workers, regardless of your position. Having accurate practice and policy data to follow is important for all healthcare facilities. The survey offers a wealth of up to reliable information that positively affects all sectors in the healthcare field, which directly impacts the patients.
