During the past four weeks, we’ve been discussing the concept of biological determinism and how it compares and contrasts with social construction as a way of explaining how and why society looks the way it does.

First, briefly explain the general argument of biological determinism – what are its general assumptions about the relationship between biology and society? What conclusions does it reach?

Then, reflect on the readings that we’ve covered regarding the socially constructed character of gender, sex, and race. Using at least two specific examples from the readings, lectures, and/or documentaries, please choose two of the three categories (gender, sex, race) and explain what it means to say that these categories are socially constructed.
