Question Description

Visual Diary: Art Mediums and Visual Elements

For this assignment, you will be creating a Visual Diary. Your collection of photos must be of specific (1) *mediums and include a (2) Formal Element analysis. This is similar to Discussion 1.

*Media or medium, refers to the materials used to make art.

You may recall the Formal Elements (or Visual Elements) from Discussion 1, Chapter 2: Line, value, color, texture, pattern, shape, volume, space, motion, chance

The Mediums from Chapter 3: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Fabrics, Needlework, Weaving, Carving, Modeling, Assembling, new technologies, performance, photography, film and video. Under each one of these mediums, there are several specific types of that medium.

For example, the sub categories for the medium of Painting: encaustic, fresco, tempera, gouache, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and spray paint (p 64-68).

For this assignment, please read the sections in the textbook on Formal Elements and Medias.

Formal Elements: please read the section in the textbook:

Ch 2; Formal Elements, from Line…….all the way to Unity and Variety.

For the hardcopy textbook: Reference Chapter 2, pages 24- 45.

Media/Mediums in Two and Three dimensional art: please read the section in the textbook:

Ch 3; Media (the entire chapter)

Requirements & Instructions

Before you begin, look to the examples from the text book, and as you are reading each media section- look to your surroundings in your home (this does not require leaving home).

Are you able to identify examples of: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Fabrics, Needlework, Weaving, Carving, Modeling, Casting (p 78), Assembling, new technologies, performance, photography, film and video? I bet you do- any books?- that’ printmaking, school pictures of your kids?- that’s photography, action figures?- that’s casting and assembling, jewelry?- modeling and assembling (sometimes carving), ice sculpture?- carving and casting, a mask you made- fabrics, a crocheted clothing item?- sounds like weaving.

Look to your personal items, manufactured items and handmade items.

1.Once you have a good grasp of what objects are made of (based on the list above), start taking photos! Make sure that you can identify the medium.

2. After you have collected twelve to fifteen examples, make a “visual diary” of all you have found.

You will be creating your own “visual diary” or collection of photos (as seen in the examples below). Follow these steps: (1) You will have to take your own photos, (2) arrange them just as you see below. (note: the arrangement can vary in format, square/rectangle/fancy borders)

You may have as many collections as you would like. There are 2 example below; considered two collections.

3. Explain (in text or video) how your images are examples of the mediums and visual element/s that you are describing.

In other words; if you are showing us images with the visual element of line, make sure to describe how the image creates line, etc

ALSO- you may choose your own Medium/s and Formal Element/s from the textbook (Chapter 2, pgs 24- 45) to record.

Note: each collection does not have to include only one medium or only one formal element. Ideally, we do want just one type of medium and just one type of formal element described. What you can do, is create a either a collection of all the same media and different formal elements, OR create a collection of various media and the same formal element. This will provide a “do-able” challenge!

Example: Below are student examples.

The left collection is showing the (1) medium of painting/drawing and the (2) formal element of pattern.

The right collection is showing the (1) medium of (too many to list!) and the (2) formal element of texture.

Include all points below in your summary

Please use the numbered format in your summary including all of the bulleted points under each number. Thank you….have fun!

Your summary (all 3 points below) may exist in a word type doc or directly typed into the “Rich Content Editor” Please view the SAMPLE TEMPLATE HERE

    1. Upload the layout (visual diary). Don’t have a smart phone or an app that will create a instant layout? That’s ok, use this pc/Mac friendly website: https://www.photocollage.com (Links to an external site.). It’s incredibly easy and discovered by a fellow classmate! From there, you can paste your jpeg image file into a word doc or upload- depending on how you prefer to send in the work.

    2. List which mediums and formal elements your diary displays (has to be from the textbooks list)- please list these specifically.

    3. A brief description of how the images you are sharing all fit into that medium or formal element. This may be typed or video recorded.

Please make sure all of these requirements are fulfilled

Please make sure all of these requirements are fulfilled before submitting:

  1. Provide the information in the numbered format above.
  2. CITE sources, if you use them (it is not necessary to use another source other than your text book). Your submission will be scanned through for originality. I will use this data to inform your grade. If you do not cite, it will “appear” that plagiarism is taking place.
  3. Try to limit your Summary to one page.
  4. Must be submitted as a pdf file.
