Everyonehas a different definition of what health is. According to WHO, healthcan be defined as a state of complete physical, mental and socialwellbeing, and not merely the absence of a disease or infirmity (Section3: Concepts of health and wellbeing, 2017). While this definition is anideal goal to reach it is not the common definition of health. Thecommon definition of health seems to be the lack of a physical cold orailment. Many people say they are healthy as a horse because they areshowing no signs and symptoms of any type of disease. Most people seemto forget that mental health and wellbeing are part of being healthy.
Peoplemust understand what healthy means and ways to achieve such standards. In today’s communities, health promotion is a key thing that is beingpromoted. Many families have barriers in place so they are not fullyabsorbing what they are being taught. Some have different beliefs suchas nature and the environment guides their choices, getting sick isbased on poor decisions made in life, or the things we eat or choices wemake affect us and our health. Also, teaching young teenagers isdifficult because in some cases they believe they know everything andlike to blame other things or people instead of taking responsibilityfor their choices. If families are open to the community and theeducation they are trying to accomplish there will be more educatedpeople out there to help manage their health.

Theidea of health has many different meanings depending on you ask. However, the most adopted definition of health is a state of completephysical, mental, social, [and spiritual] wellbeing, and not merely theabsence of disease or infirmity (Fisher, 2018, para 3).
Thedefinition of health goes hand in hand between the family and thecommunity. The definitions for the most part are the same, which focuson the overall status of the people in terms of health rather than justthe lack of illness. Some things that can be considered determinants ofhealth are shelter, access to food, preventative measures, access totreatments, and prevalence of diseases. The definition of health interms of the community is much more complex as it focuses on a largergroup of individuals rather than a particular set of individuals withinthe larger group.
The concept of health for the family is theoverall lack of illness and presence of health within individuals. Somefactors that may be taken into consideration at this level are access toclean food and water sources, adequate shelter, lack of disease orillness, etc. The concept of health in terms of the community are morebased around the prevention of disease and illness rather than thetreatment of illness. Preventative resources that are assessed for acommunitys health are annual visits, early detection lab work, vaccines, and promotion of screening measures (including things such asPAP smears, mammograms, and colonoscopies, etc.). These measures are putinto place to avoid the introduction of illness into the community, therefore determining the health status of that specific community.
Theinfluence of family beliefs and values on the definition of health arehuge. One of the major things that comes to mind is people of differentcultures. By this I mean depending on what illness means to theseindividuals, it may affect their overall definition of health. Forexample, a lot of African cultures believe that illness is caused by ahigher power as a form of punishment for bad behavior. This can alterthe definition of health because many of these individuals do not treatthe illness, they let it run its course to learn from the punishment. Many cultures have different beliefs, and their treatments may varydepending on those beliefs. Many different beliefs about health are whatmakes the concept of community health so challenging.
