#1. Key Articles of UNDRIP that relate to Indigenous Governance are:
Article 3 the UNDRIP recognizes Indigenous peoples’ right to self-determination, which includes the right “to freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.” Article 4 affirms Indigenous peoples’ right “to autonomy or self-government in matters relating to their internal and local affairs,” and Article 5 protects their right “to maintain and strengthen their distinct political, legal, economic, social and cultural institutions.
Canada originally was a non-signatories to UNDRIP. Comment on this and give your view on why Canada has decided to sign now? What might this mean?
