GCCCD Week 5 Nudity in Context in Artworks Interpretation Discussion

Question Description

The book needed is Exploring Art by Margaret Lazari and Dona Schlesier

For this discussion topic, we’ll be taking on the Getty Museum Challenge! I’ve seen this all over social media and the news and I could not resist having you all take it on as well!

The Getty Museum Challenge inspires all of us to take on visual art and bring it to life by US! Please read the Getty article before watching the video:

https://blogs.getty.edu/iris/getty-artworks-recreated-with-household-items-by-creative-geniuses-the-world-over/ (Links to an external site.)

Now that you have read the article, watch this video from PBS’s News Hour, to get more of an idea of what the challenge is about.

For this assignment, please read the section in the textbook:

Ch 2; Formal Elements, from Line…….all the way to Unity and Variety.

For the hardcopy textbook: Reference Chapter 2, pages 24- 45.

In addition to the video and blog link above.

Requirements

Now that you have read the article (Links to an external site.) and watched the video above, you are ready to create your own image! Be sure to read the requirements below:

The process:

1. First watch the video and read the article; they will help by giving some tips, who to enlist and how to frame the photograph.

2. Follow the steps that the article blog outlines.

3. You may choose an artwork from our text book OR from the Getty Museum.

4. Replicate it with yourself, your pets, family, or other household elements. Please to not attempt to draw or paint the artwork, remember that the idea is to create the same color layout or object re-creation.

5. Please do not upload a file of any sort; instead embed your images directly into the text of your assignment.

For your post:

  1. The images. Your post should include your image and the image of the artwork that you are creating. Here’s an image form the Getty website:
  2. Title, artist, medium, date: of the artwork that you are “re-creating”.
  3. Describe your process on how you chose the art work, and then staged your “re-creation”. Please describe in detail. This description should be at least one paragraph.

Grandma+-1.jpgThe artwork on the right is from the Getty Museum and is titled Advertising photo from macaroni by Florence Henri. The artwork was created in 1929 on gelatin silver making it a photograph. I found the artwork by looking through the collection tab of The J. Paul Getty website. In order to recreate the image, I first had to raid my pantry for the box of Grandma’s Cookies. Then I positioned the cookie box and some cookies in front; I was thinking about opening and laying out the cookies but I didn’t want to eat eighth cookies today. After I put my camera on a tripod and took the photo, I proceeded into photoshop. Where good old prudence was added and the “old look.” I probably could have done a little better on the color but whatever.

SECOND ASSIGNMENT

Nudity in Context

This topic is all about understanding artwork, and investigating the actual intended meaning of the symbols, objects or subject matter. It is especially important to take the time to understand artwork that can easily be mis-interpreted. In fact, all artwork benefits from truly understanding its true context and meaning. Remember that all artwork is created in a society and culture that forms its standards, ideals, values, visual aesthetic standards, etc.

In other words, art is influenced by the complete context that it is from (historical, cultural, religious, political, etc). When looking at art from various cultures, and various times in history, it is always best to keep your mind open. That way, you can better understand the art and that culture that it is from.

Select an image from the textbook, which contains nudity. This must be an image that could be easily misinterpreted without the proper context (meaning). In your summary, be sure to use the textbook’s explanation of the correct context, along with your own personal analysis.

For this assignment, please reference: Ch 6 on Reproduction and Sexuality and Ch 11 on Mind and Body. There are several examples in the text book, take some time to browse the book and find an example that will work for you.

This is a listing of just a few of the images from the book; Images/pages 1.4, 1.27, 3.36, 3.46, pg 141, 6.5, 6.7, 6.19, 6.28, pg 175, pg 291, pg 323-326, 11.22, 12.1, 12.9.

Requirements & Instructions

      1. Choose 1 artwork from the entire textbook

        • Provide: Artist, title, size, location of the artwork.

        • Make sure to include the image into the body of the document.

      2. Create an alternative meaning that could be misconstrued for the artwork, when viewed out of context. Be specific in your analysis of the artwork, subject matter, etc.

        • The idea behind this is that we will often misinterpret art work (anything, really), if we don’t know the whole story (or what the artwork is about). So, make one up, based just looking at the image.

      3. Then, provide the correct context as described in your research (make sure to cite the page number or author).

        • The correct context is the information that we know, from reading the textbook- the artists intention (typically), and the meaning of why the figure is nude.

      4. How much does context matter in interpreting an artwork’s meaning?

Include all points below in your summary

Please use the numbered format in your summary including all of the bulleted points under each number. Thank you….have fun!

    1. Choose 1 artwork from the entire textbook…

    2. Create an alternative meaning….

    3. Then, provide the correct context…..

    4. How much does context matter in interpreting an artwork’s meaning?

Please make sure all of these requirements are fulfilled

Please make sure all of these requirements are fulfilled before submitting:

  1. Provide the information in the numbered format above.
  2. CITE sources, if you use them (it is not necessary to use another source other than your text book). Your submission will be scanned through for originality. I will use this data to inform your grade. If you do not cite, it will “appear” that plagiarism is taking place.
  3. Try to limit your Summary to one page.
  4. Must be submitted as a pdf file.
