Instructions

  2. Review Chapter 10, “Termination” in The Employer’s Legal Handbook.
  3. Read the webpage “What is Employment?
  4. Read the webpage “10 Ways to Minimize Unemployment Taxes“.
  5. Respond to the following in your initial post:
    1. Termination. From the table of contents located at the start of the textbook, select one of Chapter 10’s topics of interest for further study. Next, select one of the means below to complete the research on that topic. In the initial post, include your findings.
      1. Access the Bureau of Labor Statistics to locate current national and state data.
      2. Expand on the textbook information by accessing the free online resources (e.g., blogs, podcasts, videos, reports) from the publisher.
      3. Summarize a recent newspaper article (local, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, etc.).
      4. Interview a human resource management professional to find out more on the topic, especially as it applies to a particular company.
      5. Locate a professional website and describe the helpful resources available for HR practitioners (e.g., SHRM, World at Work, ATD, etc.).
      6. Describe your current workplace practice(s) and include a copy of the policy or procedure.
      7. Detail the employment law by means of additional information from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment Law Guide: Laws, Regulations, and Technical Assistance Services or other governmental website.
      8. Explain how the topic has been addressed by a particular state or locale (e.g., law(s), social acceptance, etc.).
      9. Identify key concepts provided by one of the “go-to” or supplemental sources cited by the author in the textbook chapter reading. (For this item, be sure to share in your post the textbook page number where it was mentioned.)
    1. Employment. Review the devotional Scriptures and articles in Exercise 3.1 and respond to the following questions:
      1. Describe what new insight you gained from reading the devotional articles and the Scriptures?
      2. Explain how that new insight can be put into practice within the profession of HR?
    2. Unemployment. Complete the following:
      1. In the article, What is Employment?, Cooley (1963) shares the following sentiment:

Government “aid” of all kinds, whether it be compensation to the “unemployed,” relief to the “needy,” price supports to farmers, minimum wages to workers, subsidies to shipbuilders, easy credit to “small” business, urban renewal grants, defense contracts to “depressed areas,” or “aid to education,” should be discontinued, if not immediately, then gradually. Government should withdraw from the “aid” business, at the same time serving notice on the people that they must depend upon their own initiative. Not only the federal but the state and local governments should demobilize their “aid” forces.

      1. Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
    3. Political views can span across a wide range of differences, but when operating in a human resource management role, one must follow the existing federal, state, and local laws and best serve the company’s interests by remaining in compliance with those laws while seeking to keep costs down.
      1. Select one of the strategies in the web article 10 Ways to Minimize Unemployment.
      2. Describe how it could be beneficial for improving HR processes or mitigating risks in your workplace or a workplace with which you are familiar. (Be sure to identify the workplace.)
  6. Provide a detailed post that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking. Your initial posting should be 200–300 words long.
  7. Your initial posting is to include the appropriate references for resources you have cited through paraphrase or direct quote. Keep direct quotes and paraphrases limited to a maximum of 15% of your overall initial posting. For help on how to paraphrase, refer to the Purdue OWL Paraphrase website.
    1. For questions on APA Style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
  8. Post your initial discussion by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
  9. Also respond to two of your classmates’ postings by the end of the workshop. Each discussion response to a classmate should facilitate engaging dialogue and evidence critical thinking. Use one or more of the following ways to engage in scholarly dialogue and expand learning around the topics in this workshop:
    1. Extension: Expand the discussion.
    2. Relevancy: Relate the topic to a current event.
    3. Exploratory: Probe facts and basic knowledge.
    4. Challenge: Interrogate assumptions, conclusions or interpretations.
    5. Relational: Make comparisons or contrasts of themes, ideas, or issues.
    6. Diagnostic: Probe motives or causes.
    7. Action: Identify application or an action in personal or work life.
    8. Cause & Effect: Cite causal relationships between ideas, actions or events.

    11. Summary: Elicit synthesis. (Teacher Stream, LLC, 2009, p. 5)
