JGR 100 Strayer University Smart Goals for Academic and Professional Growth Responses
Question Description
part 1
Joe Gibbs learned at an early age that being a professional football player was an unrealistic goal based on his strengths and abilities. So, he decided to pursue his dream job as an NFL head coach. It took decades to achieve that dream, but setting effective goals helped him get there!
To find success like Coach, we need to set SMART goals. Have you ever set a goal that was unrealistic? What happened? What did you learn? Using the SMART goal framework, identify a past goal that you made for yourself and explain why it might have been unrealistic.
Part 2 Respond to Patricia Roberts
Hello Class,
I am guilty of setting unrealistic goals that I was not able to achieve. When I started working for my employer several years ago, I set a goal to transition from an entry-level position to a leadership position within a year. I believed it was something that I could accomplish based on my years of experience and my determination to do my job well. I knew I wouldn’t become a manager at that time, but I felt more than qualified to lead a group of people to assist leadership with their responsibilities. Looking back, I realize I did not fully commit to making it possible, and, of course, did not achieve my goal within the first year. The goal was unrealistic because although I felt it was something that I could do, I did not devise a plan on the steps I would work on to make it possible. Sure, I mentioned my goal to my manager at the time, but it was only a conversation to express where I see myself in the future.
After reading this weeks material, I’ve learned that using SMART goals would have helped me work towards the steps of achieving that goal or any goals I may want to accomplish. I believe I was specific in what I wanted to do but did not measure my progress towards that goal. I could have set up meetings with the leadership team to discuss a plan and provide feedback about my progress. It was good that I had a one-year timeframe, but I should have made sure that it was achievable, and the goal would be relevant to applying for a managerial position at a later date.
