MVCC How Far Should We Go Editing the Human Genome Introduction to Biology Discussion
Question Description
One of the goals of the Human Genome Project is to determine the loci (location on the chromosome of the gene) of diseases in the human genome. Once a locus (gene location) has been found, scientists work to determine the difference in the sequence of the normal allele and the mutated allele that causes the disease. Once the differences have been assessed, scientists can try to fix the mutated allele using gene therapy or CRISPR. For example, gene therapy has been studied as a possible way to treat diseases like Cystic Fibrosis. Using gene therapy or CRISPR on humans is still very experimental and controversial.
Watch these videos related to gene therapy, Human Genome Project and CRISPR before continuing with this assignment.
What will the future be like when it becomes easy for scientists to alter a person’s genes and change their alleles (and corresponding traits)? Describe 2 benefits and 2 downfalls to this technological advancement. Then give your informed opinion on if, and/or how, this technology should be used in the future. As the video says, How Far Should We Go?
Be sure to:
- reference at least 2 sources (videos, textbook, powerpoints and/or an outside reliable scientific website) within your answer.
Some reliable scientific websites are: National Geographic, PBS, Discovery, Smithsonian, New Scientist, Nature, Scientific American, Science Daily, New Science, The Guardian, Science News, Biology News, Popular Science, The New York Times Science Section, The Scientist.
If you find yourself with a lot of extra time on your hands (haha), the movie GATTACA (starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman) addresses these issues and it is a really good movie! There is a copy in the library and I found it on my Amazon/Netflix for free. This is not an assignment, just a suggestion if you are interested in biotechnology.
