CLASSMATE DISCUSSION:

The cornerstone of community mobilization consists of trust, transparency and accountability (Schiavo, 2014). Accountability ensures the stakeholders, citizens and government are able to trust the plan is implemented for the good of the members and take action when that does not happen. There are many plans developed to improve the community. Health plans are one example. Some areas where trust can be shown are transparency with procedures and decision-making processes to include financial ones. Furthermore, priorities and policies that affect the community are also significant factors because they dictate how resources will be allocated. Some attributes health officials should consider are health and media literacy of their constituents. If the messages presented to the community are not well understood because they are not in an easily identifiable language, some trust may be lost. The citizens may feel alienated and tricked out of resources because they did not gain anything from the intervention. Schiavo (2014) explains that sustainability of community health initiatives are positive indicators of a successful community mobilization and engagement. Another factor of citizen engagement is open dialogue. This allows the community to determine their needs and effectively advocate for them.
