Queens College Science News Event Discussion
Question Description
Part A needs to be done in 3 hours.
for Part B I will EXTEND the TIME for Two days.
Part A:::For this module’s discussion, research a recent science news event that has occurred in the last six months. The event should come from a well-known news source, such as ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, NPR, PBS, BBC, National Geographic, The New York Times, and so on. Post a link to the news story, and in your initial post:
- Summarize your news story and its contributions to the science or STEM fields
- If your news event is overtly related to technology, explain how this event contributes to technology studies? If your news event does not directly relate to technology, how could the science behind your event be applied to technology studies?
Part B::: Reply to two of my peers post below. In response to your peers, provide feedback about their news story and describe the value of the scientific lens for understanding technology.
Peer 1 post: According to Heydari et al., (2020), there appears to be evidence of ancient megafloods on the planet Mars. Scientists used a combination of radar and imaging technology to collect and analyze two decades of data. The Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars helped to gather evidence using images from the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE), from the Mast-mounted (Mastcams), and from the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera mounted on the arm of the Curiosity rover. (Heydari et al., 2020). Imaging technology has come along way since 1816 and it will most likely continue to evolve in human culture. The Curiosity rover is equipped with cameras, spectrometers, radiation detectors, environmental sensors, and atmospheric sensors. The ability to develop compact devices and to integrate them on a mobile rover has contributed to studying distance worlds that humankind is not yet able to reach in order to investigate the environment. We can learn about the history of the planet by studying minerals and textures of rock surfaces, we can measure the amounts of chemical elements using radiation, we can analyze mineral composition of rocks and soils, we can identify the types and amounts of different minerals, we can measure radiation, temperature, humidity, and the amounts of gases in the atmosphere.
Peer 2 Post: The article I chose was astrology based. The article states that during the early days of pur solar system, it was very different. According to scientists, they think there was a ice giant in between Uranus and Saturn. They think this unknown planet was pushed out by an unknown source. Since this article is an astronomy based article, it falls under the science part of STEM. This is a significant break through because it shows that what we know about our solar system is not always what it seemed.
