Accounting Ethics – Case Study

Accounting Ethics is designed to provide students with an opportunity to further develop ethical reasoning and communication skills necessary for accountants. Or, to put it another way, Accounting Ethics, is designed to provide students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the ethical attitudes, values, and professional responsibilities required by those in the accountancy profession.

As Accountants, and in life, you will be required to make many difficult decisions – “Should we have a going concern opinion – Shouldn’t we increase the allowance for Bad Debts? – This related party disclosure needs to be made _ I just found $20,000 in cash in a paper bag on top of a bookcase in the office of a bankrupt client – What do I do? – etc., etc., etc. Often the professionally correct opinion may be unpopular with your client or your employer. Those who succeed in the Accounting business must have the courage to resist these outside pressures. Those who “Go along to get along” don’t usually have successful careers in the profession.

REQUIRED:

1.Each of us has been involved in a personal ethical situation. Write your own ethics case based upon an experience you had personally. It does not have to be in accounting, it may be a childhood or college experience unrelated to accounting.

i.Your case study should be 8 pages.

ii.The paper should be double spaced in WORD

iii.The paper should be in 12-point New Roman Font and have 1-inch margins.

iv.Describe what led up to your ethical dilemma

v.Provide an explanation of what you did at the time.

vi.Did you look to somebody else for guidance in your situation?

vii.How did you try to resolve your ethical dilemma?

viii.Given that time has passed and looking back at the experience, what might you have done differently?
