How do you think manufacturing and productivity could improve?
The Next Manufacturing Revolution
As Scalabre mentioned in his video, the manufacturing process seems to be on a decline. Despite the marvelous advances done in other fields like technology, manufacturing seems to be stalled and has not done much changing in the past 50 years. He did mention some interesting ways to help change come into this field. Some of these methods included the use of assembly line robots, 3D printing, and the return of factories to home shores. With these positive changes in mind, how can we help manufacturing and productivity improve in its efficiency?
The Manufacturing Process
To get into the heart of the matter; if there’s one thing I learned from cybersecurity is that, no matter the field, employees are an integral part of any process. The manufacturing process is no exception. Training for employees should be regularly done, and by having employees with a basic grasp of the whole manufacturing process, they should be able to work more efficiently. Another way is to take a multifaceted approach and measure multiple factors. This assures that no aspect of the manufacturing process is under counted or underrepresented.
Productivity
Going back to the first point made, employees are an important part of the manufacturing process. As such, it is best to keep their productivity as efficient as possible. One way to do this is to promote proper, and more modern, communication skills among management. This can come in the form of professional writing techniques and transition to modern modes of communication such as social networking tools (an article by Workest lists Slack as an example of this). Another good way to promote productivity is by providing employees proper incentives. As stated in the Workest article, keeping employees happy and feeling appreciated can lead to better productivity.
Conclusion
As Scalabre stated in his video, the next manufacturing revolution is well on the way. This, however, does not happen as quickly as we would all hope. As such, we need to identify steps in order to help in this transition, such as those listed above. Are there other ways to improve manufacturing and productivity? What are your opinions on the revolution predicted by Scalabre?
