Quantitative research is the traditional research approach in nursing; it includes descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental types of studies.

EBP involves the use of the best research evidence to support clinical decisions in practice. The levels of research evidence are a continuum, with the highest quality of research evidence at the top of the pyramid and the weakest research evidence at its base (see Fig. 1.3). Evidence-based guidelines are rigorous, explicit clinical guidelines that have been developed based on the best research evidence available in that area.

Locate and provide one journal article on appropriate coping strategies for burnout prevention that would be a Level II, III, IV, or V study according to the Hierarchy of Evidence and:

Developing the clinical question in an area of interest and conducting an extensive search of evidence-based sources is an effective way to identify current evidence for use in practice. The clinical question is often developed using the PICO format which includes (1) population, (2) intervention, (3) comparisons, (4) outcomes, and sometimes (5) time.

Read the scenario, identify the PICOT elements based on the information provided in the scenario and then formulate a potential PICOT question.

• You work at an institution that had a significant problem with burnout in bedside nurses. The Chief Nurse Executive (CNO) thinks that the key to preventing burnout over the course of a nurse’s career is for the nurse to use appropriate coping strategies.
