University of Miami Social Power Is More Important than Economic Power Research Paper

Question Description

Debate topic: Economic power is more important than social power in society.

The side of the debate is pro, so my side believes that Economic power is more important than social power in society.

Assignment Description

Fact Debate (Constructive statement, 4 min; Rebuttal, 2 min; Conclusion, 2 min): Students engage in a (team debate). Each student presents their evidence-based claims with the consequences of each claim (alternating between the affirmative and opposing sides).

Assignment Requirement

Each student responds to the opposition with a rebuttal. Each student presents their conclusion. The debate is discussed and evaluated by the instructor and the audience, utilizing various debrief strategies including question and answer.

The resolution is a fact or a value-based resolution that requires identification and definition of significant theory and/ or social institution (DSS 200.1) and the examination of global forces shaping society in this lens (DSS 200.2).

The formal outline should be constructed in the proper format with the constructive statement being outlined as a proper formal outline (the introduction, main points, and conclusion) and the addition of 10 evidence points, listed at the end of the outline, to be used for the rebuttal and conclusion.

Assignment Instructions

This debate will be a fact debate – a debate with two open sides to the debate – and your team will argue in favor of one of these open sides. The purpose of this fact debate is for you to collaborate with your partner, research both sides of the argument so that you can state your position and defend it. You must provide specific examples of human behavior around the world to support your points.

Thus, in preparation for and during your debate, you must rely on your DSS 200 iBook chapters, case studies, your course reader (Born a Crime by Trevor Noah), knowledge of the role of social institutions – family, education, economy, religion, etc. as well as outside research [and your position paper]. Use these as relevant and appropriate when arguing your side of the debate.

Debate Structure:

  1. A 2 v. 2 team debate (4 total participants).
  2. Resolutions for the debate can be chosen by each team from the list below written by the faculty to be fairly balanced.
  3. Students coordinate with their group so that they are evenly divided on each side of the resolution (Pro/Con).
  4. The constructive statement must include three constructive contentions, which each include a claim with a chain of reasoning and evidence supporting the claim (4 min).
  5. The rebuttals must respond to each of the Constructive Contentions provided by the other side (2 min).
  6. The conclusions must include the top reasons their side ultimately wins the debate by weighing the extent of the impacts (2 min).
  7. The student prepares for all parts of the debate with the formal outline (some sections may need to be left blank).
  8. Sources are properly cited with oral citations, in-text citations and reference list using correct APA style (APA “student paper” with Calibri 11 font).
