In general, governments pay private companies less money to care for a prisoner than they have to spend if they house the prisoner themselves. Although it is lowering cost a 2016 report from the Justice Department found that private prisons had a 28 percent higher rate of inmate-on-inmate assaults and more than twice as many inmate-on-staff assaults, as well as twice as many illicit weapons than comparable federal facilities. The role I believe it is playing in the criminal justice system is it is taking over government business. Since it is cheaper people tend to want to support that one more and before we know it there will only be private sectors. In the future I can see more inmate being mistreated especially if its only private jails because private institutions have more say on what happens in there jail. No one can just come on there property and make them change there rules.
