Steel assignment

There is more than just design that goes into structural steel design. Structural steel design does not just involve structures designed from scratch, but also retrofitting and rehabilitation. To be a high quality structural engineer it is important to understand the construction, assembly, loading, and deterioration of the steel structure itself. Your objective is to research a steel structure that supports a load and document the following information:

1. Intro – Brief description of the case study structure, its typical location, and its typical function.

2. List the main components of the structure (if you don’t know what something is research or ask me). Provide a loading diagram of the structure and include a list of the main loads that the structure supports. (EX: Show the trickle down of loads on a multi-story building, from roof to footings

3. Background on the construction of the steel structure – do some research (how is it built in the field, what type of machinery is needed, time frame, special requirements, etc)

4. Provide detailed notes explaining the case study, how it involves with structural steel design, and its historical importance to structural steel design (What are our lessons learned).

5. Provide any recommendations of analysis or maintenance items for the structure. (Ex. If a beam has severe rust you could recommend analyzing the beam per the reduced section).
